With a detox, you can purify the body of harmful and unwanted substances.

Your body naturally has built-in mechanisms to clean itself. Just think about your liver and your kidneys. Is it useful to do a detox at all?

What is a detox?

During a detox, the organs get rest by fasting. This way the liver is stimulated to remove toxic substances. The body is also stimulated to remove toxic substances through the stool, urine and sweat.

In the last 70 years, 80,000 new chemicals have entered the market. These are processed in our food, cleaning products, pesticides, cosmetics, clothing, upholstery and medicines. Only a few hundred of these substances have been tested for safety.

The contrast with the amount of junk we receive today is of course huge. And the capacity of the liver may be large, but it is not designed to remove this kind of contaminants. And certainly not for the enormous amounts to which our bodies are exposed.

The fact that we are dealing with a lot of pollution will be clear to everyone, but the mechanism on how a detox removes this contamination from the body is not entirely clear.

There are many forms of detox cures. One stricter and heavier than the other. With some, you have to fast and you can only drink while in other forms (certain) solid food is allowed.

Many people will feel better during a detox cure. They feel more energetic and more focused. It is not known whether this is due to the removal of toxic substances by the body or the healthy diet that is eaten (or drunk) during a cure (or by a combination of both).

If your goal is only to lose weight, you can go for a diet that allows you to achieve lasting results. After a detox cure, you will gain quickly again, as after every crash diet is the case. A suitable diet for lasting results is the low-carbohydrate diet.

Do you doubt about doing a commercial detox treatment where people claim that you waste a lot? Remember that this is no more than disguised crash diets: you do not just lose weight in a responsible and sustainable way.

Dangers of a detox treatment

The market for detox supplements is not regulated. Anyone who wants to put a detox supplement on the market can do that detox drinksand the supplements are available for sale. You will, therefore, have to be vigilant and do research before you decide to use a particular supplement.

A detox supplement usually consists of one or more herbs that are available as tea, pills, elixirs or drops.

For example, the herbs that are used stimulate the liver and/or kidneys to dispose of waste. Herbs that are widely used are artichoke, dandelion and milk thistle.

A number of superfoods can also support you with a detox cure.

They are:

  • Turmeric; this is a strong antioxidant and supports the kidneys
  • Ginger; helps in the detoxification of the body and has anti-inflammation properties
  • Spirulina; helps the body to detoxify heavy metals
  • Chlorella; helps the body to detoxify heavy metals and dioxins

When don’t do a detox?

If you are breastfeeding, the toxic substances that are released can be breastfeeding.

If you have problems controlling your blood glucose, first consult your doctor before you start a detox cure.

Juice cure program

beet smoothieFor everyone who wants to do a detox cure, we have put together a juice cure program. This program is quite mild and is also suitable for people who want to do a detox for the first time.

As mentioned, there are many different ways to detox. A juice cure as detox is the most common and has the advantage that you will provide the body with a huge amount of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Because you drink fruit and vegetables, like juices, your body gets a lot more vegetables and fruit than usual.

This juice treatment is meant to detoxify your body and does not aim for weight loss.

You will lose weight from this treatment but see it more like a (pleasant) side effect.blueberry smoothie

If your goal is only to lose weight, you are better off following a diet, such as the low-carbohydrate diet.

You might lose weight less quickly, but your results are better to hold.

The juice treatment program that we have put together for you is for 3 days. 3 days you can keep as a minimum to detoxify your body.

If you feel good about it, you can, if you like, continue with this juice cure longer. Many people do a detox for up to a week.

I would advise you to no longer do it like 2 weeks, you will lose too much muscle mass because of the lack of proteins which is unfavorable for your resting metabolism.

spinach parsley smoothieTo detox, for longer than 3 days you can simply repeat the juice recipes from day 1,2 and 3. If you want you can also indicate your own twist here by adding ingredients. Check first if your ingredients are detox-friendly. For example, milk is not detox-friendly; foods with an animal origin do not belong in a detox cure.

Since the purpose of a detox is to detoxify your body, it is of course important that you only use organic vegetables and fruit. Also, rinse organic fruit and vegetables with water before you use it.

If you have already followed a detox program before, you can fasting 2 days before you start the juices. During these days you only drink water (possibly with lemon juice) and detox herbal tea.

If you are currently living on a diet consisting of fast food, the switch to a detox juice cure is rather intense. You do well to first eat healthy for a week, in preparation, before you start the juice cure.

I would advise you to use the day before you really start detoxing as a preparation day. For example, body and mind can already prepare a bit for the detox and the transition to juices is less intense and you have less chance of side effects such as headaches.

You eat solid food on the preparation day. You keep it with exclusively unprocessed food and you do not eat (heavily) processed foods such as biscuits, sweets, meats, sausages and ready-to-eat meals.

On your preparation day, opt for vegetable milk replacements instead of dairy and preferably eat vegetarian.

You can drink several glasses of juice at a time. It is not the intention that you starve yourself and remember that vegetable juice contains hardly any calories. So drink a lot of it.

Listen to your body during a detox. It is normal that you get hungry at times, this automatically disappears.

If you suffer from headaches, a feeling of light in your head and you are shaky, it is perhaps better to break down or interrupt the detox. Especially when this is not less and does not improve after drinking a lot of water. With a bowl of savory soup or some carbohydrate-rich food, you will soon feel better again.

During a detox, it is very important that you drink a lot, even outside the juices. Drink only green tea, herbal tea, water or juices. If you have dark colored urine then that is a sign that you drink too little.

  • 9 o’clock: juice # 4: Pineapple with blueberries
  • 12 o’clock: juice # 5: Cucumber with celery
  • 15 o’clock: juice # 2: beetroot and pineapple
  • 18 o’clock: juice # 3: spinach and parsley

Day 3

  • When you get up you take a detox herbal tea (brand of your own preference)
  • 9 o’clock: juice # 1: Beetroot and celery
  • 12 o’clock: juice # 1: Red beet and pineapple
  • 15 o’clock: juice # 3: spinach and parsley
  • 18 o’clock: juice # 5: Cucumber and celery

Recipe juice # 1: Beetroot and celery

Beetroot and celery

This recipe is not only delicious, but it is also full of nutrients and electrolytes.

Red beets contain anthocyanins (dyes that belong to the flavonoids) which has anti-inflammatory properties and acts as an antioxidant.

Red beets are good at a detox because it contains the substance betaine. This substance is good for detoxifying the liver cells. The type of fibers in beets (pectin) help the body to be able to dispose of waste materials through the faeces.

This juice recipe also contains ginger. Ginger has a lot of proven health benefits, including anti-inflammation properties and it helps with weight loss.

A big advantage of ginger is that it helps well against nausea. This makes you feel less nauseous when you get hungry. This helps to keep the detox better.

Celery is an ingredient used in many detox treatments, because of the moisture drifting properties.


  • 3 stalks of celery
  • 3 small red beets
  • 1 ripe pear
  • 2 cm of a ginger stalk
  • A lemon
  • A quarter of a cucumber
  • A piece of broccoli strain
  • 1 carrot
  • A half yellow pepper


  1. Clean the red beets and cut them into pieces.
  2. Peel the pear and cut it into pieces.
  3. Cut the celery into pieces.
  4. Take a piece of broccoli strain of about 6 to 7 cm and cut it into pieces.
  5. Take 1 large carrot, clean it and cut it into pieces.
  6. Cut a yellow pepper into pieces.
  7. Put these ingredients in the slowjuicer.
  8. Put the juice from the slowjuicer in a blender and add a piece of ginger of about 2 cm long (cleaned).
  9. Cut the lemon and squeeze out the juice above the blender.
  10. Put the blender on the highest setting for 2 minutes so that the ginger is finely ground.

Recipe juice # 2: Red beet and pineapple

This recipe contains another super herb: turmeric. This herb has really mind-blowing many health benefits. It is an extremely strong antioxidant, works anti-inflammatory, strengthens the immune system and supports the functioning of the kidneys which is important during a detox.

Pineapple contains bromelain (a group of proteolytic enzymes) which works as a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Pineapple also contains substances that have a positive effect on your mood. It is so nice for your environment, if you are not completely yourself the moment you get a hunger feeling.


  • 2 red beets
  • 2 cucumber
  • 2 apples
  • Half a pineapple
  • Half a lemon
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 2 liters of water


  1. Clean the red beets and cut them into pieces.
  2. Peel the cucumbers and apples and cut them into pieces.
  3. Clean the pineapple and cut it into pieces.
  4. Put these ingredients in the slowjuicer and make juice.
  5. Put the juice in a large glass jug and mix it with about 2 liters of water.
  6. Squeeze half a lemon above and add a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Just stirring and ready.

Recipe juice # 3: Spinach and parsley

Spinach and parsley

Spinach contains chlorophyll (leaf green) and gluthation, both of which have a detoxifying effect.

Parsley is a powerful herb and is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It stimulates the kidneys to remove toxins from the body.

The chlorella in this recipe provides extra chlorophyll, besides beta carotene, vitamin C and lutein.

Chlorella is praised for its detox properties. For example, chlorella reduces the concentrations of very harmful dioxins in the body (source).

In animals, researchers have shown that chlorella helps to remove heavy metals from the body (source, source, source).


  • 200 grams of spinach
  • 1 hand full of fresh parsley
  • 1 green apple
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 cm fresh ginger root
  • 2 teaspoons of chlorella


  • Peel the apple and the cucumber and cut them into pieces.
  • Put the spinach, parsley, cucumber and apple in the slow juicer to make juice.
  • Put the juice in the blender.

  • Half a pineapple
  • 150 grams of blueberries
  • 150 grams of strawberries
  • 1 orange
  • 200 ml of organic coconut milk


  1. Clean the pineapple and orange and cut them into pieces.
  2. Put the coconut milk in the blender and add the pineapple pieces first and mix until you have a nice smooth whole.
  3. Add the remaining pieces of fruit and blend until you have a nice smoothie.
  4. Add some ice cubes to make a delicious cool smoothie.

Cucumber and celery

  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 apple
  • 2 cm ginger root
  • Half a lemon


  1. Cut the celery, cucumber and apple into pieces and put them in the slowjuicer and make juice.
  2. Clean a piece of about 2 cm ginger root and put it in a blender. Add the juice of the slowjuicer and squeeze half a lemon over the juice. Mix for 2 minutes at the highest setting so that the ginger is finely ground.
  3. Add a handful of ice cubes, this will benefit the taste.
